I just spent a morning at the community garden ripping out Wandering Jew. Back in Alaska, I had a Wandering Jew that I kept coaxing along in our living room. Every once in a while I would have to strip out all the old, dead branches and start again from scratch. Here, it is literally a weed that takes over the garden. It even blooms these pretty blue flowers, which I never had the opportunity to witness in the U.S. Strange how different things can be depending on your locale.
We have just returned from a 3 day camping trip with our friends Scott and Brenda. I will attempt to post some pictures soon. Unfortunately, my camera seems to have gotten quite a bit of dirt in it, so I will need to spend some extra time photoshopping. Stay tuned!

I think that Wandering Jew is no longer politically correct here. Not sure what name is correct though. I currently have a variegated one that I've liked a lot. It needs repotting (on today's "to do" list.) After a number of years I managed to kill the one that had come from my grandmother, so hoping the same fate doesn't await this one. Think that the one you had in AK was probably derived from that one.

I had gotten it from A. Nelle. I'll check with her to see if she still has some to replace mine. Then when you return stateside if you want it, you can have cuttings from either hers or mine.

I have a Wandering Jew that is very hearty. The original plant came down with me from Rhode Island and I inherited it from a tenant. Some are in the house wintering over. Outside on the patio there is growth that goes deep in winter and emerges once spring gets going. I love the purple flowers. Very nice purple and looks lovely against the green vine. I noticed today though the winter has burned the vinca vine. I hope it doesn't mean the Wandering Jew got frost-killed under ground. I do have some sort of perennial - have no idea what it is - which has already come up about 2". Hope it means spring is about ready to burst on the scene.

I agree - using the old-school name of Wandering Jew just makes me think you're telling a funny and somewhat violent story. Apparently the botanical name is "Tradescantia fluminensis" which leads to the nickname "Trad". To me, this also sounds a lot like "Chad" - so from now on, I'm going to refer to this rambling weed as "The Chad".
