Tasmania Part III: In Which We Realize That You Can Go Home Again, Or Something Like It

Our third day, we went on a hike at Lake St. Clair National Park. This was a bit of a bust, so I don’t really have any pictures. First of all, the drive was too long for a day trip (2 ½ hours one way). Secondly, we misread the map, and didn’t make it to the destination of our hike, a lake where we were supposed to see platypuses. So basically we drove 5 hours to do a 3 hour hike through Eucalytus forest. Poor planning on my part.

Our final day we drove up Mt. Wellington, the 1300 meter peak above Hobart (you can see it in the background behind the Cascade Brewery). We should have done this on the third day, because there were loads of cool hiking trails and it would have been great to do at least one of them. The views from the top were quite spectacular, and the scenery reminded me a lot of Alaska, because it was above treeline. It also reminded me of Alaska because it was quite cold! I wished I had my hat and gloves!

Our friend Pete was also in Tasmania from Melbourne while we were there, so each night we went out to dinner with him. It was good to catch up, and the dinners we had were fantastic. Tasmania is expensive, but I really enjoyed the food we ate while we were there.

Except for our misguided hiking attempt, we really enjoyed Tasmania. The scenery was very pretty and the lack of people made the experience very relaxing. I would like to go back again, but I don’t know if we’ll be able to before we leave.

So beautiful. Was it really windy or were the temps super low? We did a birthday for Maerwyn. It is not so lovely here. I'd love to know the kind of meals you had.

It was a bit chilly, but the wind is what made it really cold. Pretty unpleasant.

Let's see: we ate Vietnamese food one night, Italian food one night, and pub food the third night. We also had lunch at a fish and chips place and had a cheese platter at a cheese factory. The fish and chips was the most diappointing, the rest was really good but expensive, except for the cheese platter.
