So, my boss is encouraging me to learn PERL scripting by this summer. I think it will be good for my career; it will set me apart from other forecasters when I try to get a promotion or a job in another office.
However, I'm a little unsure about the best way to go about learning PERL. I'm not sure how much books will help me, and the office can't really afford to send me to a special class....I guess I'll have to do some research on this one.

You could just buy a book, preferably one with a CD tutorial, and run through it. I've always had an easier time learning code by reading examples and then doing problem sets. I'm guessing PERL is similar to most computer languages?
Anyway, that's what I'd do. Taking a class can help, but you can probably learn it well enough if you run through a bunch of practical exercises with a good reference manual.
