General Update

..in which I inform you of the day-to-day goings on, sans pictures.

Work: is going pretty well. A job came open working for the Rural Fire Service, and although when I moved here I thought I would want to move there, I decided against applying for it. For one thing, it would have doubled my commute, which is already on the long side of half an hour one way. For another, it would have taken me out of the forecasting center, so I would not have as many meteorologist contacts. Also, I like my coworkers, so to move someplace where I don’t know if I would like the people was a big gamble. Third, I am finally getting some experience forecasting severe thunderstorms, which was a gaping hole in my resume. So I really didn’t want to give that up.

Ethan: seems to be enjoying the stay-at-home-husband role. He is fanatically brewing beer and slightly less fanatically pursuing kite surfing. He’s helping out quite a bit by purchasing groceries and taking care of the dog. Because he’s been biking a lot, he’s also lost a lot of weight. Although he didn’t really need to, it probably helped to clear his arteries of all the saturated fat he’d been eating in AK. So I guess that’s a good thing.

Fievel: seems to really like being here. He enjoys the sun and the warm temperatures and has resumed his role as House Leader. We don’t call him Prince Fievel for no reason. He is still a jerk on walks and therefore doesn’t get taken out as much as he should. That’s his own fault, though. Inside, he’s awfully cute and cuddly and a constant source of entertainment.

Friends: we’re making some, although some will be leaving soon. We have an American friend who is here short-term, and a new Aussie friend who got a job in Melbourne and will be heading down there soon. That’s a bit of a bummer, but I’ve met some other cool people at work and church, so we plan to try to get together with them more often.

Australia: is fun, although we don’t seem to be doing that many different things than we did in the U.S. We need to get out a little bit more to explore the country. We’ll probably do a bunch more of that this fall, once the temperatures drop a little bit. In the meantime, I really do mean to do some more swimming and fishing. We’re at the beach; I should enjoy it!

That’s it for now. Expect more lengthy updates from time to time on our endeavors such as the beer brewing and the gardening. And if we go anyplace with kangaroos, I’ll try to remember our camera/card next time, honest!
